We are thrilled to announce that Pediatric Physical Therapy will officially be joining Back Bay Speech & Occupational Therapy this summer!
As our practice continues to grow, our goal has always been to provide families with comprehensive, collaborative care under one roof. By adding Physical Therapy (PT) to our existing Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy services, we can better support children’s development and help families access the services they need in one convenient location.
What Is Pediatric Physical Therapy?
Pediatric Physical Therapy focuses on helping children develop the strength, balance, coordination, and movement skills needed to participate confidently in everyday activities. Physical therapists work with infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents who may be experiencing challenges with gross motor development, mobility, endurance, or physical function.
Through play-based activities and individualized treatment plans, pediatric physical therapists help children build the skills they need to explore their world, keep up with peers, and participate in family, school, and community activities.
What Can Pediatric Physical Therapy Help With?
Our pediatric physical therapist will support children with a wide variety of developmental and orthopedic concerns, including:
Delayed Motor Milestones
Children who are late to roll, sit, crawl, stand, or walk may benefit from physical therapy to build strength and movement skills.
Torticollis and Head Shape Concerns
Support for babies with neck tightness (torticollis) and head shape differences such as plagiocephaly or brachycephaly.
Toe Walking
For children who consistently walk on their toes, physical therapy can help assess movement patterns, flexibility, strength, and overall function.
Frequent Falls or Poor Balance
Children who seem unsteady, trip often, or have difficulty navigating playgrounds, stairs, or uneven surfaces may benefit from an evaluation.
Low Muscle Tone
Physical therapy can help children build strength, endurance, stability, and confidence in movement.
Coordination Challenges
Support for children who have difficulty with running, jumping, climbing, hopping, catching, kicking, or keeping up with peers during physical activities.
Orthopedic Injuries and Pain
Physical therapy can address a variety of musculoskeletal concerns, including knee pain, hip pain, sports injuries, and recovery following injury.
Neurological and Genetic Conditions
Children with diagnoses such as Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), and other genetic or neurological conditions may benefit from ongoing physical therapy support.
What Makes Our Approach Different?
At Back Bay Speech & Occupational Therapy, we believe therapy should be practical, collaborative, and family-centered.
Our physical therapy services will include:
- Individualized evaluations with the treating therapist
- Play-based, child-led treatment sessions
- Parent education and home activity recommendations
- Collaboration with occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physicians, teachers, and other providers when appropriate
- Flexible options including in-office and select home-based services
Most importantly, we focus on helping children build functional skills that make a meaningful difference in their daily lives.
Why Early Intervention Matters
Children develop at their own pace, and every child is unique. However, addressing movement challenges early can help prevent frustration, build confidence, and support participation in everyday activities.
If you’ve been wondering whether your child is meeting developmental milestones, struggling with balance or coordination, or could benefit from additional support, a physical therapy evaluation can provide valuable information and guidance.
